The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever plays with dice is as though he had dipped his hand in the flesh and blood of a swine."
أن النبي ﷺ قال: من لعب بالنردشير فكأنما صبغ يده في لحم خنزير ودمه.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Poetry (2260) from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi told us, from Sufyan, from Alqama bin Marthad, from Sulayman bin Burayda, from his father, who said, and then he related it. There are other hadiths conveying the same meaning, but they are not sound.His statement, "nardashir," nard is a foreign word, and shir means sweet, so nardashir is a sweet game played with a board, pieces, and two dice, depending on luck, in which the pieces are moved according to what the dice show. It is known among common people as tawla (backgammon). One says, "He played nard."These four things, meaning wine, gambling, idols, and divination arrows, Allah forbade and warned against, informing of their corrupting effects and their impurity, even though that impurity is not a physical one, and that they are the work of Satan, who wants to stir up enmity and hatred, as mentioned in the verse that follows.
