I heard Umar say from the pulpit of the Prophet ﷺ, "Now then, people, the prohibition of khamr was revealed, and it is made from five things, from grapes, dates, honey, wheat, and barley. And khamr is whatever clouds the mind."
سمعت عمر على منبر النبي ﷺ يقول: أما بعد، أيها الناس إنه نزل تحريم الخمر، وهي من خمسة: من العنب والتمر والعسل والحنطة والشعير والخمر ما خامر العقل.
Bukhari narrated it in the Tafsir (4619), and Muslim in the Tafsir (3032:33), both through the route of Ibn Idris, who said, our teacher Abu Hayan told us, from Shaybi, from Ibn Umar, who said, and then he mentioned it. Muslim added, "And there are three matters, O people, concerning which I wish the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had left us a binding directive that we could follow, the grandfather's inheritance, the kalalah, and certain matters relating to riba."As for His saying, "and gambling", this means gambling and backgammon, backgammon being a form of gambling, as Ibn Umar and others have said. Ali bin Abu Talib and others said, "Chess is a form of gambling." For this reason Abu Hanifa, Malik, and Ahmad held the view that chess is forbidden, while Shafii merely disliked it.Ibn Abdul-Barr said in al-Tamhid (13/175), "Playing backgammon is forbidden altogether, with no exception made for any particular time or circumstance. It makes no difference whether backgammon distracts one from prayer or not, or whether it diverts one from that or similar obligations or not." End of quote.And this has come in the Sahih.
