The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to visit me while I was ill and unconscious. He performed ablution, and they poured some of his ablution water over me, and I regained consciousness.I said, "Messenger of Allah, only distant relatives will inherit from me."Then the verse of inheritance was revealed.I said to Muhammad bin Munkadir, "Is it "They ask you for a ruling. Say, Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalalah" [Nisa 4:176]?"
Bukhari narrated it in Wudu (194), and Muslim in Inheritance (8:1616), both from the hadith of Shuba, who said, Muhammad bin Munkadir informed me, he said, I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, and then he narrated it. The wording given here is Muslim's.In one version, then the verse of inheritance was revealed, which is His saying, "Allah instructs you concerning your children, for the male what equals the share of two females" [Nisa 4:11].Kalalah comes from iklil, the wreath that encircles the head from all its sides. For this reason the scholars have interpreted it as referring to someone who dies leaving neither child nor parent. Some scholars held that kalalah means one who has no child, citing as evidence the noble verse "If a man dies leaving no child". But the sound tradition of the Prophet indicates the additional condition of no parent as well, as was detailed earlier in the Book of Inheritance. This is what the majority of scholars among the companions, the successors, the leading imams, and others have held. His saying, "If a man dies leaving no child, but he has a sister, then she shall have half of what he left", means that if, along with the sister, he leaves a daughter, then the sister gets half and the daughter gets half, as stated in the sahih.
