I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "After sixty years there will come a generation who neglect the prayer and follow their desires, and they shall meet ruin. Then there will come another generation who recite the Quran, but it will not pass beyond their throats. Three types of people recite the Quran, a believer, a hypocrite, and a sinner."Bashir said, I asked al-Walid, "Who are these three?"He replied, "The hypocrite is one who disbelieves in it, the sinner is one who makes a living from it, and the believer is one who believes in it."
Ahmad (11340) narrated it from Abu Abdul-Rahman, who said, Haywa related to us, Bashir bin Abu Amr Khawlani told me that Walid bin Qays told him that he heard Abu Saeed say (then he related the hadith). Walid bin Qays is Tujibi, whom Ajli deemed reliable, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators. Ibn Hibban (755) and Hakim (2/74) both graded it sahih and narrated it by this route. Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in isnad, which the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate."Something similar has also been narrated from the hadith of Abu Hurairah, which Ibn Nasr recorded in Qiyam al-Layl (74). Its isnad contains Ibn Lahia, who is daif.
