The Prophet ﷺ said, "The needy person is not the one who is turned away with a date or two, or a morsel or two. The needy person is the one who restrains himself from begging. Recite, if you wish," meaning the words of Allah Most High, "who do not beg from people importunately" [Baqarah 2:273].
قال النبي ﷺ: ليس المسكين الذي ترده التمرة والتمرتان، ولا اللقمة، ولا اللقمتان، إنما المسكين الذي يتعفف، واقرؤوا إن شئتم- يعني قوله تعالى: {لا يسألون الناس الحافا}.
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4539), and Muslim in the zakat (1039), both from the hadith of Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Sharik bin Abu Nimr told me that Ata bin Yasar and Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Amra al-Ansari said, we heard Abu Hurairah say, and then he related the hadith. The wording given is that of Bukhari. As for Muslim, he referred to the wording of the hadith of Ismail bin Jafar, the brother of Muhammad bin Jafar, for he related the hadith in full through the route of Ismail bin Jafar, then said regarding the narration of Muhammad bin Jafar, "similar to the hadith of Ismail." This means that Muhammad bin Jafar and his brother Ismail bin Jafar agreed on the wording of the hadith, except that Ismail bin Jafar narrated it from Sharik, from Ata bin Yasar alone.As for His saying, "insistently" [reference to the word ilhaf], it means they do not press persistently in asking, for whoever asks while having enough to spare him from asking has indeed pressed insistently in his request, and that is toil.
