Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

They used to dislike giving small gifts to their polytheist relatives, so they asked about it, and permission was granted for them to give such gifts. Then this verse was revealed, "Not upon you is their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills. And whatever good you spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the face of Allah. And whatever good you spend will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged" [Baqarah 2:272].

عن ابن عباس قال

كانوا يكرهون أن يرضخوا لأنسبائهم من المشركين، فسألوا، فرضخ لهم، فنزلت هذه الآية: {ليس عليك هدهم ولكن الله يهدي من يشاء وما تنفقوا من خير فلأنفسكم وما تنفقون إلا ابتغاء وجه الله وما تنفقوا من خير يوف إليكم وأنتم لا تظلمون}
