Ibn Abu Hatim narrated it in his Tafsir (2/404), from Yunus bin Abdul-Ala by recitation, who said, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, saying, Ibn Lahia informed me, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Amir bin Yahya, from Hanash bin Abdullah, from Abdullah bin Abbas, who mentioned it.Ibn Lahia has well-known criticism against him, but Abdullah bin Wahb narrated from him, and he is one of the Abadila, and their narrations from him are more reliable than those of others, so his hadith is considered hasan.Another reason for the revelation of this verse was also mentioned from him, namely what Imam Ahmad narrated (2414) through another route, from Amir bin Yahya Maafiri, with his chain, with the wording, "This verse was revealed concerning some people from the Ansar who came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Approach her in any manner, as long as it is in the vagina.'" Its chain of transmission includes Rushdin bin Saad, who is daif.Should it then be said that there are several reasons behind the revelation of this verse? Or that it was revealed for a single reason, and the rest of the reasons were mentioned by Ibn Abbas as his own deduction and personal reasoning? This latter view is closer to being correct.It is also reported from Saeed bin Jubayr that he said, While Mujahid and I were sitting with Ibn Abbas, a man came to him and stood over his head and said, "O Abu Abbas" - or "O Abu Fadl" - "will you not clarify for me the verse about menstruation?" He said, "Yes," and he recited, "They ask you about menstruation" [Baqarah 2:222], until he reached the end of the verse. Ibn Abbas said, "From wherever the blood comes, that is where you have been commanded to approach."The man said to him, "O Abu Fadl, what then about the verse that follows it, "Your women are a tillage for you, so come to your tillage however you wish" [Baqarah 2:223]?" He said, "Indeed, woe to you! Is there any tillage in the anus? If what you say were true, then the verse about menstruation would be abrogated. When this place is closed off, you still come from this very place. But 'however you wish' refers to night or day."Ibn Jareer narrated it in his Tafsir (3/750), and Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (2/402), with their respective chains of transmission, and the wording given here is Ibn Jareer's. Its chain includes Ammar Duhni, whose hadith is hasan.So in these hadiths is a prohibition against approaching women in anything other than their vaginas, a matter that has been transmitted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through many different routes.
