Umar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I am ruined!"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What has ruined you?"Umar replied, "I turned my saddle around last night."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not respond to him with anything. Then this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Your wives are a tilth for you, so come to your tilth however you wish" [Baqarah 2:223]. Approach from the front or from behind, but avoid the anus and menstruation.
جاء عمر إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله! هلكت، قال: وما أهلكك؟ قال: حولت رحلي الليلة، قال: فلم يرد عليه رسول الله ﷺ شيئا، قال: فأنزلت على رسول الله ﷺ هذه الآية: {نساؤكم حرث لكم فأتوا حرثكم أنى شئتم} أقبل وأدبر، واتق الدبر والحيضة.
Tirmidhi (2980), Nasai in Kubra (10973), Ahmad (2703), and Tahawi in Mushkil (6127) all reported it, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (4202), all of them through the route of Yaqub bin Abdullah Qummi, who said, Jafar bin Mughira narrated to us, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, hasan gharib, and in one copy, hasan sahih.I say, its chain is hasan on account of the discussion regarding Yaqub bin Abdullah Qummi and his teacher Jafar bin Mughira, though they graded the hadith hasan.Another reason has been reported from Ibn Abbas for the revelation of this verse, which follows.
