I went in to see Hafsa bint Abdul-Rahman and said, "I want to ask you about something, but I feel too shy to ask."She said, "Don't be shy, nephew."So he asked, "What about approaching women in their rear?"She replied, "Umm Salama told me that the Ansar used not to approach their women from behind, for the Jews used to say that whoever approached his wife from behind would have a cross-eyed child. When the Emigrants came to Madinah, they married women of the Ansar and approached them from behind. One woman refused to comply with her husband and said to him, 'You will not do that until I go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'So she came to Umm Salama and mentioned the matter to her.Umm Salama said, "Sit down until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ comes."When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, the woman of the Ansar was too shy to ask him, so she left, and Umm Salama told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it.He said, "Call the woman of the Ansar."She was called, and he recited this verse to her, "Your wives are a tilth for you, so come to your tilth however you wish" [Baqarah 2:223], through one opening only.
Ahmad (26601) narrated it from Affan, who said, Wahib told us, Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym told us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Sabit, and he related it.Tirmidhi (2979) narrated it through another route from Sufyan, from Ibn Khuthaym, with the same content in abbreviated form, and he said, Hasan, and in one manuscript, hasan sahih.I say, it is hasan only, for Ibn Khuthaym is disputed, though his hadith is considered hasan.Wajaba yajbi comes from tajbiya, meaning that the woman would be in the position of prostration.Another reason has been given for the revelation of this verse, from Ibn Abbas, which is as follows.
