The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Son of Adam, giving away your surplus is better for you, and holding it back is worse for you. You will not be blamed for keeping what is sufficient. Begin with those you support, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: يا ابن آدم، إنك أن تبذل الفضل خير لك، وأن تمسكه شر لك، ولا تلام على كفاف، وابدأ بمن تعول، واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1036) through several routes from Umar bin Yunus, who said, Ikrima bin Ammar narrated to us, Shaddad narrated to us, saying, I heard Abu Umama say, and then he mentioned it.As for his saying, "and that you withhold it is worse for you," this means that if a person has fulfilled the obligations due upon him, such as zakat and other dues, and then withholds the remainder, this is worse for him in the hereafter, because it diminishes his reward. As for this world, it is permissible for him, and what is permissible is not something bad.As for his saying, "and you are not blamed for having only what is sufficient," this means that if, after paying zakat, he retains enough to sustain himself, he is not blamed. Likewise, if what remains after paying zakat falls short, he is entitled to take zakat and charity from others for his sufficiency and to meet his needs.
