Yusuf bin Mahak reported, I was with Ayesha, the Mother of the Believers , when an Iraqi man came to her and asked, "Which kind of shroud is best?"She replied, "Woe to you, what does it matter to you?"He said, "Mother of the Believers, show me your copy of the Quran."She asked, "Why?"He answered, "Perhaps I may arrange the Quran according to it, for it is being recited in an unarranged order."She said, "What harm is there in whichever part of it you recite first? The first portion of it that was revealed was a surah from the Mufassal section mentioning Paradise and the Fire. Then, once people had returned to Islam in numbers, the verses on the lawful and the unlawful were revealed. Had the first thing revealed been, 'Do not drink wine,' they would have said, 'We will never give up wine.' And had it been revealed, 'Do not commit fornication,' they would have said, 'We will never give up fornication.' There was revealed in Mecca to Muhammad ﷺ, while I was still a young girl playing, "Indeed, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more grievous and more bitter" [Qamar 54:46]. Surah al-Baqarah and Surah an-Nisa were not revealed until I was already with him."He said, So she brought out the Quran for him, and she dictated to him the verses of the surahs.
