A man named Nuhayk bin Sinan came to Abdullah and said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, how do you recite this word, do you find it with an alif or a ya, min main ghayri asin or min main ghayri yasin?"Abdullah replied, "Have you memorized the entire Quran except for this?"The man said, "I recite the Mufassal section in a single rakah."Abdullah said, "Do you race through it like one rushes through poetry? There are people who recite the Quran but it does not pass beyond their throats. When it settles in the heart and takes root, it benefits the reciter. The most virtuous part of the prayer is the bowing and prostration. I know the paired surahs that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite together, two surahs in each rakah."Then Abdullah got up and went inside, and Alqama followed him in. When Alqama came out, he said, "He has told me what they are."
Muslim narrated it in "The Prayer of the Traveler" (822:275) through several routes, from Waki, from Amash, from Abu Waail, as mentioned. The scholars agree that excessive haste in recitation is disliked, but they differ over whether it is better to recite with tarteel (slow, measured recitation), or to recite without tarteel while still pronouncing the letters correctly from their proper points of articulation. Those who held that tarteel is preferable said, this serves the purpose of reflection that Allah commanded, "Then do they not reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction" [Nisa 4:82]. Those who held that tarteel is not necessary said, for every letter there are ten rewards.I say, each of these approaches affects the heart differently, and whichever has the greater effect is the better one.
