Zayd bin Thabit reported that Abu Bakr sent for him at the time when the people of Yamama were killed, and Umar was with him. Abu Bakr said, "Umar came to me and said, 'Death has struck the people hard at Yamama, and I fear that death will strike the reciters hard in other places as well, so that much of the Quran will be lost unless you gather it. I think you should have the Quran gathered.'"Abu Bakr continued, "I said to Umar, 'How can I do something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?'"Umar replied, "By Allah, it is a good thing."Abu Bakr said, "Umar kept pressing me about it until Allah opened my heart to it, and I came to see what Umar saw."Zayd bin Thabit said that Umar was sitting there with him, saying nothing. Then Abu Bakr said, "You are a young man of sound judgment, and we hold nothing against you. You used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So track down the Quran and gather it."Zayd said, "By Allah, if he had asked me to move a mountain from its place, it would not have been heavier upon me than what he ordered me to do in gathering the Quran. I said, 'How can the two of you do something the Prophet ﷺ did not do?'"Abu Bakr answered, "By Allah, it is a good thing."Zayd said, "I kept arguing with him until Allah opened my heart to what He had opened the hearts of Abu Bakr and Umar to. So I got up and tracked down the Quran, gathering it from scraps of parchment, shoulder blades, palm stalks, and the memories of men. I found two verses of Surah Tawbah with Khuzayma Ansari that I found with no one else, 'There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is your suffering. He is deeply concerned for you, and to the believers he is kind and merciful' [Tawbah 9:128], through to the end of the passage."The sheets in which the Quran had been gathered remained with Abu Bakr until Allah took him, then with Umar until Allah took him, and then with Hafsah, the daughter of Umar.
Bukhari narrated it in the Tafsir (4679) from Abu Yaman, who said, Shuayb told us, from Zuhri, who said, Ibn Sibaq told me, that Zayd bin Thabit Ansari narrated it as mentioned.Bukhari said, Uthman bin Umar and Layth followed him, from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab.Layth said, Abdul-Rahman bin Khalid told me, from Ibn Shihab, and he said, "with Abu Khuzayma Ansari."Musa said, from Ibrahim (that is, Ibn Saad Zuhri), Ibn Shihab told us, "with Abu Khuzayma."Yaqub bin Ibrahim followed him, from his father.Abu Thabit said, Ibrahim told us, and he said, "with Khuzayma or Abu Khuzayma."Bukhari also included, in the Virtues of the Quran (4989), the narration of Layth, from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, in which he said, "with Abu Khuzayma Ansari." Likewise he included, in the Book of Monotheism (7425), the hadith of Ibrahim, from Ibn Shihab, in which it says, "with Abu Khuzayma Ansari." He also narrated it with uncertainty in the Rulings (7191), from the narration of Ibrahim bin Saad, from Ibn Shihab, in which it says, "with Khuzayma or Abu Khuzayma."This is how Bukhari presented these narrations. What appears from this is that the sahih version among them is the one that said "Khuzayma Ansari," the one titled Dhul-Shahadatayn, that is, Khuzayma bin Thabit bin Fakih bin Thalaba Khatmi Ansari, from Banu Khatma of Aws. He is the one known as Dhul-Shahadatayn, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made his testimony equivalent to the testimony of two men, and his story is recorded in its proper place. He is not the brother of Zayd bin Thabit, for Zayd is the son of Dahhak bin Zayd Ansari Najjari. As for Abu Khuzayma Ansari, it is said that he is Ibn Aws bin Yazid, well known by his kunya, and it is also said that he is Harith bin Khuzayma. He was not the possessor of the two testimonies, so that Zayd bin Thabit would accept his testimony on that basis. As for what is said, that Umar bin Khattab testified to that on his behalf, this involves Muhammad bin Ishaq, who was known to conceal his sources, and he narrated this using the ambiguous form of transmission ("an"). And Allah knows best.
