Bazzar (4564) and Hakim (2/230) both narrated it through the route of Hajjaj bin Minhal, who said, Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Qatada, from Hasan, from Samura, and he related it. Its isnad is sahih. The wording given here is that of Hakim. In Bazzar's version it reads, "three presentations," which is a mistake. What is established in the sahih is that he presented it twice in the year before he passed away, and that he used to present it once every year.His statement, "they would say," refers to the companions. The purpose of the Quran being presented to him and compared against him was so that whatever remained would stay, and whatever had been abrogated would go, for Allah Most High says, "Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring forth better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things?" [Baqarah 2:106]
