We administered medicine to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by force into the side of his mouth during his illness. He gestured for us not to do so, but we thought it was merely the patient's dislike for medicine. When he recovered, he said, "No one of you shall be spared from being given the same treatment, except Abbas, for he was not present with you."
لددنا رسول الله ﷺ في مرضه فأشار أن لا تلدوني فقلنا: كراهية المريض للدواء فلما أفاق قال: لا يبقى أحد منكم إلا لد غير العباس فإنه لم يشهدكم.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Medicine (5712), and Muslim in the Book of Greetings (2213), both through the route of Yahya bin Saeed (that is, Ibn Qattan), who said, Sufyan (that is, Thawri) narrated to us, saying, Musa bin Abu Ayesha narrated to me, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah, from Ayesha, who said, and she mentioned it.As for her saying, "Do not force medicine into my mouth," al-ladud refers to medicine poured into one side of the sick person's mouth without their choice, while what is poured into the throat is called al-wajur.
