A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "My brother is suffering from diarrhea."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give him honey to drink."The man did so, then returned and said, "I gave him honey, but it only made his diarrhea worse."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated his instruction three times. When the man came the fourth time, the Prophet ﷺ said again, "Give him honey to drink."The man replied, "I have already given it to him, but it only made his diarrhea worse."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has spoken the truth, and your brother's stomach has lied."So he gave him honey to drink, and he was cured.
جاء رجل إلى النبي ﷺ فقال: إن أخي استطلق بطنه فقال رسول الله ﷺ: اسقه عسلا فسقاه ثم جاءه فقال: إني سقيته عسلا فلم يزده إلا استطلاقا فقال له ثلاث مرات، ثم جاء الرابعة فقال: اسقه عسلا فقال: لقد سقيته فلم يزده إلا استطلاقا فقال رسول الله ﷺ: صدق الله وكذب بطن أخيك. فسقاه فبرا.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Medicine (5684), and Muslim in the Book of Greetings (2217), both from the hadith of Qatada, from Abu Mutawakkil, from Abu Saeed Khudri, as mentioned. The wording given is that of Muslim, while Bukhari's wording is abridged.His statement "istatlaqa" comes from "istitlaq," which means diarrhea. Diarrhea only occurs when corrupt matter has accumulated in the stomach, and this matter must be expelled. Honey is the most beneficial and quickest means of expelling this corrupt matter.
