The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in, accompanied by Ali, who was recovering from an illness. We had clusters of dates hanging up, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and began eating from them. Ali stood up to eat as well, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying to him, "Stop, Ali, you are still recovering," until Ali held back. She said, I prepared some barley and chard and brought it in. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ali, take some of this, for it is more beneficial for you."
Reported by Abu Dawud (3856), Tirmidhi (2037m), Ibn Majah (34429), Ahmad (27051-27053), and Hakim (4/204), all of them through various routes from Fulayh bin Sulayman, from Ayub bin Abdul-Rahman bin Sasaa, from Yaqub bin Abu Yaqub, from Umm Mundhir bint Qays, who related it as mentioned. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith." I say, it is as he said, for Fulayh bin Sulayman is disputed, though his hadith is hasan, and Yaqub bin Abu Yaqub and Ayub bin Abdul-Rahman are both truthful.Tirmidhi also reported it (2037) through a route from Fulayh bin Sulayman, from Uthman bin Abdul-Rahman Taymi, from Yaqub bin Abu Yaqub, from Umm Mundhir, who related something similar. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith, which we do not know except through the report of Fulayh."As for his statement "convalescing," this refers to the recovery of a sick person, naqah, when he has healed and regained strength, while still being recently afflicted by the illness such that the fullness of his health and strength has not yet returned to him.
