Narrated by Abu Dawud (3871), Nasai (4355), and Ahmad (15757), and Hakim graded it sahih (4/410–411), all of them through routes going back to Ibn Abu Dhib, from Saeed bin Khalid, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Abdul-Rahman bin Uthman Taymi, who narrated it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Saeed bin Khalid, who is Ibn Abdullah bin Qariz Kinani, for he is hasan al-hadith.As for what was narrated from Abdullah bin Amr, who said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "I do not care what I have done if I drink a theriac, wear an amulet, or compose poetry of my own accord," its chain of transmission is daif. It was narrated by Abu Dawud (3869) and Ahmad (7081), both from the hadith of Abdullah bin Yazid, who said, Saeed bin Abu Ayub narrated to us, Shurahbil bin Sharik Maafiri narrated to us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Rafi Tanukhi, who said, I heard Abdullah bin Amr narrate it.Except that in Sunan Abu Dawud it appears as Shurahbil bin Yazid, which is an error. Abu Dawud said, "This applied specifically to the Prophet ﷺ, and some people have permitted it," meaning the theriac.Its chain of transmission is daif because of Abdul-Rahman bin Rafi Tanukhi. Bukhari said of him, "His hadith contain munkar reports." Dhahabi said in al-Muhaddhab (15186), "This is a munkar hadith. Ibn Rafi has been criticized because of it, or perhaps it belongs to what was particular to him , for he permitted poetry for others." End quote.
