I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people at Khayf, saying, "May Allah brighten the face of a servant who hears my words, retains them, and then conveys them to those who have not heard them. Many a bearer of knowledge has no understanding of it, and many a bearer of knowledge carries it to one who understands it better than he does. Three things over which the heart of a believer harbors no malice, sincerity in deeds, obedience to those in authority, and adherence to the community, for their call encompasses all who follow them."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ وهو يخطب الناس بالخيف: نضر الله عبدا سمع مقالتي فوعاها، ثم أداها إلى من لم يسمعها، فرب حامل فقه لا فقه له، ورب حامل فقه إلى من أفقه منه، ثلاث لا يغل عليهن قلب المؤمن: إخلاص العمل، وطاعة ذوي الأمر، ولزوم الجماعة، فإن دعوتهم تكون من ورائه.
Imam Ahmad (16754) narrated it from Yaqub, who said, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Amr bin Abu Amr, the freedman of Muttalib, narrated to me, from Abdul-Rahman bin Huwayrith, from Muhammad bin Jubayr, from his father, and he related it.Hakim (1/87-88) also narrated it through this same route and passed over it in silence. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq and his teacher and his teacher's teacher, for each of them produces hasan hadith.It has other chains recorded by Ibn Majah (231, 232), Imam Ahmad (16738), and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (1541), though there is some criticism of them. The one I have mentioned is the soundest of them.
