Amir bin Rabia saw Sahl bin Hunayf bathing and said, "I have never seen anything like what I see today, not even the skin of a sheltered virgin." Sahl immediately collapsed where he was.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was approached, and it was said, "Messenger of Allah, can you do something for Sahl bin Hunayf? By Allah, he cannot even raise his head."He asked, "Do you suspect anyone of having harmed him?"They replied, "We suspect Amir bin Rabia."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Amir, became angry with him, and said, "On what grounds would one of you kill his brother? Why did you not invoke a blessing for him? Wash yourself for him."So Amir washed his face, his hands, his elbows, his knees, the ends of his feet, and the inside of his lower garment in a vessel, then it was poured over Sahl. Sahl then went off with the people, with nothing wrong with him.
Malik related it in Al-Ayn (2) from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf, who mentioned it. Nasai related it in Al-Kubra (7571-7572), and Ibn Majah (3509), and Ibn Hibban (6106), and Hakim (3/410-411), all of them through various chains from Zuhri, from Abu Umama, in mursal form.Abu Uways connected it from Zuhri, as found in Ahmad (15980), and Ibn Abu Dhib followed him in this, as found in Tabarani (6/98), both saying, from Zuhri, from Abu Umama, from his father Sahl bin Hunayf, who mentioned it. The hadith is the hadith of Sahl bin Hunayf. This account has been narrated through other chains with considerable variation in their wording. Among them is what Abu Dawud (3888), and Ahmad (15978), and Hakim (4/413) related, all of them through the route of Uthman bin Hakeem, who said, my grandmother Rabab told me, she said, I heard Sahl bin Hunayf say, we passed by a flood channel, and I went in and bathed in it, then I came out feverish, and word of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he said, "Tell Abu Thabit to seek refuge with Allah." She said, I said, "My lord, are incantations of any use?" He said, "No, except against the evil eye, or a scorpion sting, or a snakebite."Abu Thabit is Sahl bin Hunayf bin Wahib the Ansari, the subject of this account. This chain is daif because of Rabab, who is unknown, and no one narrated from her except Uthman bin Hakeem. She added in her narration, "Tell Abu Thabit to seek refuge with Allah," and no one else corroborated her on this point in this account.Among them also is what Ibn Majah (3506), and Ahmad (15), and Hakim (4/215-216) related, and in their chains is Umaya bin Hind bin Saad, who is unknown. Ibn Main said, I do not know him.
