My father Sahl bin Hunayf bathed at al-Kharrar and removed a cloak he was wearing, while Amir bin Rabia was watching. Sahl was a fair-skinned man with beautiful skin.Amir bin Rabia said to him, "I have never seen anything like what I see today, not even the skin of a virgin."At that moment Sahl was struck with a fever, and it grew severe. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed that Sahl had been taken ill and that he would not be able to set out with him. It was said, "Messenger of Allah, he cannot travel with you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him, and Sahl told him what had happened with Amir.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Why would one of you kill his brother? Why did you not invoke a blessing? The evil eye is real. Perform ablution for him."So Amir bin Rabia performed ablution for him, and Sahl set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no harm in him.
اغتسل أبي سهل بن حنيف بالخرار، فنزع جبة كانت عليه، وعامر بن ربيعة ينظر، قال: وكان سهل رجلا أبيض، حسن الجلد، قال: فقال له عامر بن ربيعة: ما رأيت كاليوم، ولا جلد عذراء، قال: فوعك مكانه، واشتد وعكه، فأتي رسول الله ﷺ، فأخبر أن سهلا وعك، وأنه غير رائح معك يا رسول الله، فأتاه رسول الله ﷺ، فأخبره سهل بالذي كان من شأن عامر، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: علام يقتل أحدكم أخاه، ألا بركت، إن العين حق، توضأ له، فتوضأ له عامر بن ربيعة، فراح سهل مع رسول الله ﷺ، ليس به بأس.
Malik narrated it in the chapter on the evil eye (1), from Muhammad bin Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf, from his father, and he mentioned it. Via Malik's route, Nasai narrated it in al-Kubra (7570), and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (6105).Its isnad is sahih, except that Abu Umama, whose name was Asad bin Sahl bin Hunayf, was born during the era of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ two years before his death, so his narration would be mursal (disconnected). However, this particular narration is known to state "from his father, Sahl bin Hunayf," as will be shown later.
