The Prophet ﷺ heard a man supplicating, "Allah, I ask You for the completion of favor."He asked, "What is the completion of favor?"The man replied, "It is a supplication I have made, hoping for good through it."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, part of the completion of favor is entering Paradise and being saved from the Fire."He also heard a man saying, "Possessor of Majesty and Honor."He said to him, "You have been answered, so ask."And the Prophet ﷺ heard a man saying, "Allah, I ask You for patience."He said, "You have asked Allah for tribulation, so ask Him instead for well-being."
Tirmidhi (3527) and Ahmad (22017, 22056) both narrated it, both by the route of Sufyan Thawri and Ismail bin Ibrahim bin Ulaya, from Jareeri, from Abu Al-Ward, from Lajlaj, from Muaz bin Jabal, who then mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan hadith."I say, it is as he said, for Abu Al-Ward bin Thumama is hasan al-hadith. Ibn Saad said, "He was well known, though he narrated few hadiths." Ahmad said in al-Ilal (1/440), "Jareeri narrated hasan hadiths from him."Jareeri is Saeed bin Iyas, who was among those whose memory became confused later in life, but the narration of Thawri and Ibn Ulaya from him predates that confusion. Ahmad said, "Even if Jareeri had narrated nothing but this hadith, it would have been."
