The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May the mercy of Allah be upon us and upon Musa. Had he not hastened, he would have seen wonders, but he felt embarrassed before his companion and said, 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have already received from me an excuse' [Kahf 18:76]. Had he been patient, he would have seen wonders."The narrator said, whenever he mentioned any of the prophets, he would begin with himself, saying, "May the mercy of Allah be upon us and upon my brother so-and-so, may the mercy of Allah be upon us."In another wording from him, he said, whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated for anyone, he would begin with himself. One day he mentioned Musa and said, "May the mercy of Allah be upon us and upon Musa. Had he been patient, Allah Most High would have related to us more of his story, but 'he said, If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have already received from me an excuse' [Kahf 18:76]."
في قصة الخضر وموسى
قال رسول الله ﷺ: رحمة الله علينا وعلى موسي، لولا أنه عجل لرأى العجب، ولكنه أخذته من صاحبه ذمامة {قال إن سألتك عن شيء بعدها فلا تصحبني قد بلغت من لدنى عذرا} [سورة الكهف: ٧٦] ولو صبر لرأى العجب قال: وكان إذا ذكر أحدا من الأنبياء بدأ بنفسه رحمة الله علينا وعلى أخي كذا رحمة الله علينا. وفي لفظ عنه: قال: كان رسول الله ﷺ إذا دعا لأحد بدأ بنفسه، فذكر ذات يوم موسى فقال: رحمة الله علينا وعلى موسي، لو كان صبر لقص الله تعالى علينا من خيره، ولكن {قال إن سألتك عن شيء بعدها فلا تصحبني قد بلغت من لدنى عذرا}
Muslim narrated it in the chapters on virtues (1380: 171-172) via Raqabah, from Abu Ishaq, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, from Ubayy bin Kaab, mentioning it with the first wording, in the story of Khidr and Musa. Bukhari narrated this story through many routes, except that he did not mention the part about starting with oneself. As for the second wording, it was narrated by Ahmad (21126), Abu Dawud (3984), and Tirmidhi (3385), and Hakim graded it sahih (2/574), all of them through routes from Hamza Zayyat, from Abu Ishaq, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, from Ubayy bin Kaab, mentioning it.The wording given is Ahmad's, and the wording of the others is similar to it, except that Tirmidhi limited it to the fact that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned someone and prayed for him, he would begin with himself. Its chain is hasan because of Hamza Zayyat, for he is hasan al-hadith. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib sahih hadith." Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the standard of the two Shaykhs."I say, Bukhari did not narrate from Hamza Zayyat, rather Muslim narrated from him. Ibn Majah narrated it (3852) via Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on us and on the brother of Aad." The correct version is from Abu Ishaq, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, from Ubayy bin Kaab.
