We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ compiling the Quran from scattered parchments when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Blessed is Sham."We asked, "Why is that, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "Because the angels of the Most Merciful spread their wings over it."
كنا عند رسول الله ﷺ نؤلف القرآن من الرقاع فقال رسول الله ﷺ: طوبى للشام. فقلنا: لأي ذلك يا رسول الله؟ قال: لأن ملائكة الرحمن باسطة أجنحتها عليها.
Tirmidhi (3954) narrated it, and this is his wording, as did Ahmad (21606, 21607) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (5/175-176). Ibn Hibban (7304) and Hakim (2/229) both graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through various routes from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Abdul-Rahman bin Sahammasa, from Zayd bin Thabit, who related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Munziri mentioned it in Targhib wal-Tarhib (4658) and said, "Tirmidhi narrated it and graded it sahih, as did Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and Tabarani with a sahih chain of transmission."
