The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When Allah created Adam, He wiped his back, and from his back fell every soul that He would create from his offspring until the Day of Resurrection. He placed between the eyes of each one of them a glimmer of light. Then He presented them to Adam.Adam asked, 'My Lord, who are these?'He replied, 'These are your descendants.'Then Adam saw a man among them whose glimmer between his eyes pleased him, and he asked, 'My Lord, who is this?'He answered, 'This is a man from the last of the nations among your descendants, called Dawud.'Adam asked, 'Lord, how long have You made his life?'He said, 'Sixty years.'Adam said, 'My Lord, increase his life by forty years from my own.'When Adam's appointed term came to an end, the Angel of Death came to him. Adam said, 'Have I not still forty years remaining of my life?'The angel replied, 'Did you not give them to your son Dawud?'Adam denied it, so his descendants denied. Adam forgot, so his descendants forgot. Adam erred, so his descendants erred."
Tirmidhi (3076) narrated it from Abd bin Humayd, who said, Abu Naeem told us, Hisham bin Saad told us, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Hakim graded it sahih (2/325), and narrated it through the route of Abu Naeem, in the same manner, and said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." Firyabi also narrated it through this route in Qadr (19).Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih, and it has been narrated through more than one route from Abu Hurairah."I say, it contains Hisham bin Saad, who is disputed. Ibn Main, Ahmad, Nasai, and others declared him daif, while some of them regarded him favorably. He is "truthful but has misconceptions," as stated in Taqrib. As for the other route that Tirmidhi alluded to, it is what Ibn Wahb narrated in his book Qadr (8), and from him Firyabi (20) and Abu Yaala (6377) narrated through the route of Ibn Wahb, who said, Hisham bin Saad told me, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Hurairah, relating the same thing.Abu Zura was asked about these two routes and said, "The hadith of Abu Naeem is more sahih, and Ibn Wahb erred in this hadith." Ilal by Ibn Abu Hatim (88/2).
