The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When Allah created Adam and breathed the spirit into him, he sneezed and said, 'Praise be to Allah,' praising Allah by His leave. So his Lord said to him, 'May Allah have mercy on you, Adam. Go to those angels,' to a group of them seated together, 'and say, Peace be upon you.'He went and said, 'Peace be upon you,' and they replied, 'And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.'Then he returned to his Lord, who said, 'This is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants among themselves.'Then Allah said to him, with His hands closed, 'Choose whichever of them you wish.'Adam said, 'I choose the right hand of my Lord, and both hands of my Lord are right hands, blessed.'Then He opened it, and there were Adam and his offspring inside. Adam asked, 'My Lord, who are these?'He answered, 'These are your offspring.'Each person had his lifespan written between his eyes. Among them was a man more radiant than the rest, or among the most radiant of them. Adam asked, 'My Lord, who is this?'He replied, 'This is your son Dawud. I have written for him a lifespan of forty years.'Adam said, 'My Lord, increase his lifespan.'He answered, 'That is what I have written for him.'Adam said, 'My Lord, then I give him sixty years from my own lifespan.'He said, 'That is for you to do.'Then Adam dwelt in Paradise as long as Allah willed, after which he was sent down from it, and Adam began counting his own days. The angel of death came to him, and Adam said to him, 'You have come too soon. A thousand years were written for me.'The angel said, 'True, but you gave your son Dawud sixty years.'But Adam denied it, so his offspring deny, and he forgot, so his offspring forget. From that day on, the use of written records and witnesses was commanded."
Tirmidhi (3368) narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, "Safwan bin Isa told us, Harith bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zubab told us, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah," and he related it. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih and recorded it in Kitab Tawheed (107) through this same route, and from him Ibn Hibban recorded it in his Sahih (6167). Hakim also recorded it (1/64) through another route from Safwan bin Isa, and said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim, for Muslim relied on Harith bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zubab as evidence, and others besides Safwan narrated from him as well, but I recorded it through the hadith of Safwan because I have a higher chain through it." Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib through this route."I say, its chain is hasan due to some minor criticism directed at Harith bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Saad bin Abu Zubab, though his hadith is considered hasan, and he has been corroborated. Ibn Abu Asim narrated it in Sunnah (204) through this same route, and through another route (205) without giving its wording in full, but that chain contains Mubarak bin Fadala, who is "truthful, but he conceals his sources and smooths over chains," as stated in Taqrib. Nasai and others graded him daif, though he is acceptable for corroborating narrations.Hakim also cited another chain for it, saying, "It has a sahih corroborating witness. He said, Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ali the jurist Shashi told us, along with others, and they said, Abu Bakr Urwa told us, Mukhlid bin Malik told us, Abu Khalid Ahmar told us, from Dawud bin Abu Hind, from Shaybi, from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet, similarly." End of quote.Daraqutni mentioned this hadith in Ilal (1467) through several routes from Abu Hurairah and considered it the preserved version from him, though Nasai preferred the narration of Muhammad bin Ajlan from Saeed, from his father, from Abdullah bin Salam, attributing it to him alone rather than to the Prophet (Sunan al-Kubra, 9976).It has also been narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said, "When the verse on debt was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The first to deny was Adam ' - or, 'the first to deny was Adam' - 'When Allah
created Adam, He wiped his back and brought forth from it all who would be spread forth as his descendants until the Day of Resurrection. He then began showing him his offspring, and he saw among them a man shining with light, and he said, "My Lord, who is this?" He said, "This is your son David." He said, "My Lord, how long is his life?" He said, "Sixty years." He said, "Lord, add to his life." He said, "No, unless I add to it from your own life." Now Adam's life was a thousand years, so he added to David's forty years from his own, and Allah
wrote a document to that effect and made the angels bear witness to it. When Adam was on the verge of death and the angels came to take his soul, he said, "There remains forty years of my life." It was said, "You have already given that to your son David." He said, "I did not do that." So Allah
brought forth the document before him, and the angels bore witness against him.'"Ahmad (2270, 2713), Abu Yaala (2710), and Tabarani in Kabir (12928) all narrated it, through the route of Hammad bin Salama, from Ali bin Zayd, from Yusuf, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Through this same route, Ibn Abu Asim also recorded it in Sunnah (204) in a very abridged form, but its chain is daif because of Ali bin Zayd, who is Ibn Abdullah bin Zuhayr bin Abdullah bin Jadaan Taymi Basri, and the scholars are unanimous in judging him daif, except Tirmidhi, who said, "Truthful."The narration that Adam
gave forty years of his life to David
is more likely to be correct than the narration that he gave him sixty years, for the narration of forty years came through the route of Hisham bin Saad, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Abu Salih Samman, from Abu Hurairah, attributed to the Prophet, and Imam Abu Dawud said, "Hisham bin Saad is the most reliable of people regarding Zayd bin Aslam." Imam Tirmidhi, when he recorded the narration that Adam
gave forty years of his life to David
, said, "This is a hadith hasan sahih," but when he recorded the narration of him giving sixty years, he said afterward, "This is a hadith hasan gharib through this route." See Tuhfat Ahwazi (8/365).
