Marwan bin Hakam addressed the people and spoke of Mecca, its sanctity, and its inhabitants, but he made no mention of Medina, its inhabitants, or its sanctity. So Rafi bin Khadij called out to him and said, "Why do I hear you mentioning Mecca, its inhabitants, and its sanctity, yet you say nothing of Medina, its inhabitants, and its sanctity? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared sacred all that lies between its two lava fields, and we have this recorded on a piece of Khawlani leather. If you wish, I will read it to you."Marwan fell silent for a moment, then said, "I have heard something of that."
أن مروان بن الحكم خطب الناس، فذكر مكة وحرمتها وأهلها، ولم يذكر المدينة وأهلها وحرمتها، فناداه رافع بن خديج فقال: مالي أسمعك ذكرت مكة وأهلها وحرمتها، ولم تذكر المدينة وأهلها وحرمتها، وقد حرم رسول الله ﷺ ما بيتن لابتيها، وذلك عندنا في أديم خولاني إن شئت أقرأتكه، قال: فسكت مروان، ثم قال: قد سمعت بعض ذلك.
