The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Hardness of heart and harshness are found in the East, while faith is found among the people of the Hijaz."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: غلظ القلوب والجفاء في المشرق، والإيمان في أهل الحجاز.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (92:53) from Ishaq bin Ibrahim, who said, "Abdullah bin Harith Makhzumi informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said, 'Abu Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir bin Abdullah,'" and he related it.As for what was narrated from Amr bin Awf bin Zayd bin Mulhah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Religion will withdraw to Hijaz just as the snake withdraws into its hole, and religion will cling to Hijaz as the mountain goat clings to the top of the mountain. Religion began as something strange and will return to being something strange, so blessed are the strangers who set right what people have corrupted of my sunnah after me." This is extremely daif.Tirmidhi narrated it (2630) from Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman, who said, "Ismail bin Abu Uways informed us," who said, "Kathir bin Abdullah bin Amr bin Awf bin Zayd bin Mulhah told me, from his father, from his grandfather," and he related it. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan," and in one manuscript, "Hasan sahih." This is leniency on his part, for Kathir bin Abdullah bin Amr is extremely daif.Shafii and Abu Dawud said, "He is one of the pillars of lying." Daraqutni and others said, "He is discarded." Dhahabi mentioned in Mizan, among his hadiths, "Reconciliation is permissible between Muslims," which Tirmidhi graded sahih. This is why the scholars do not rely on Tirmidhi's grading of it as sahih.Ibn Adi said, "Most of what he narrates is not corroborated."I say, there is a clear irregularity in his hadith, for the sahih version is, "Faith withdraws to the two mosques," not to the whole of Hijaz.
