Some men from the Ansar said regarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when Allah granted His Messenger ﷺ the spoils from the wealth of Hawazin, and he began giving certain men of Quraysh a hundred camels each, "May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gives to Quraysh and leaves us aside, while our swords still drip with their blood."Anas said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of what they had said, so he sent for the Ansar and gathered them in a tent of leather, allowing no one else to join them. When they had assembled, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and said, "What is this talk that has reached me from you?"Their wise men replied, "As for our men of sound judgment, Messenger of Allah, they said nothing. But some of our younger men said, 'May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gives to Quraysh and leaves the Ansar aside, while our swords still drip with their blood.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I give to men who are recent in their abandonment of disbelief. Are you not pleased that the people should depart with the worldly goods, while you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? By Allah, what you return with is better than what they return with."They said, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah, we are pleased."He said to them, "After me you will see severe favoritism shown to others, so be patient until you meet Allah and His Messenger ﷺ at the Pool."Anas said, but we did not remain patient.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on the obligation of khumus (3147), and Muslim in the chapter on zakat (1059-132), both of them by way of Zuhri, who said, "Anas bin Malik informed me," and he related it.The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim related something similar, adding at the end, after his words "you will meet Allah and His Messenger at the Basin," "They said, 'We will be patient.'"
