Abu Bakr and Abbas passed by a gathering of the Ansar who were weeping. He asked, "What is making you weep?"They replied, "We were recalling the gatherings the Prophet ﷺ used to hold with us."So he went in to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of this. The Prophet ﷺ then came out with the edge of a cloak wrapped around his head as a band. He ascended the pulpit, and he never ascended it again after that day. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "I urge you to take care of the Ansar, for they are my closest companions and my trusted confidants. They have fulfilled what was due from them, and what is due to them remains. So accept from those of them who do good, and overlook the faults of those of them who err."
Bukhari narrated it in Manaqib Ansar (3799) from Muhammad bin Yahya Abu Ali, who said, Shazan the brother of Abdan told us, my father told us, Shuba bin Hajjaj informed us, from Hisham bin Zayd, who said, I heard Anas bin Malik say, and then he mentioned it.
