By Allah, the opening verses of Surah al-Mujadilah were revealed concerning me and Aws bin Samit. She said, I was married to him, and he was an elderly man whose temper had grown harsh and irritable. One day he came in to me and I answered him back about something, and he became angry and said, "You are to me like the back of my mother."Then he went out and sat for a while in his people's gathering place, then came back in to me, and he wanted to be intimate with me.She said, I told him, "Absolutely not. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Khuwaylah, you shall not have your way with me after you have said what you said, until Allah and His Messenger judge between us with their ruling."She said, He pounced on me, but I refused him and overpowered him as a woman overpowers a weak old man, and I threw him off me.Then I went out to one of my neighbors and borrowed her garments, then went on until I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat before him. I told him what I had suffered from my husband, and I began to complain to him ﷺ about the bad temper I endured. She said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying, "Khuwaylah, your cousin is an elderly man, so fear Allah regarding him."She said, By Allah, I had not left when Quran was revealed concerning the matter. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was overcome by what used to come over him during revelation, then it passed from him, and he said to me, "Khuwaylah, Allah has revealed verses concerning you and your husband."Then he recited to me, "Allah has indeed heard the statement of the woman who pleads with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah, and Allah hears the dialogue between you. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing" [Mujadilah 58:1], up to His words, "and for the disbelievers is a painful punishment" [Mujadilah 58:3].Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Tell him to free a slave."She said, I replied, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he does not possess anything with which to free a slave."He said, "Then let him fast two consecutive months."She said, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he is an elderly man with no capacity for fasting."He said, "Then let him feed sixty poor people a wasq of dates."She said, I replied, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he does not have that either."She said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "We will assist him with a basket of dates."She said, I said, "And I, Messenger of Allah, will help him with another basket."He said, "You have done right and well. Go and give it as charity on his behalf, then take good care of your cousin."She said, So I did.Abdullah said, My father said, Saad said, "The araq is the basket."
Narrated by Ahmad (27319) - this is his wording - and Abu Dawud (2215, 2214), and Ibn Jarud (746), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (4279), and Bayhaqi (7/389), all of them from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, "Mamar bin Abdullah bin Hanzala narrated to me, from Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam, from Khawla bint Malik bin Thalaba," and so he related it.Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, and because of his teacher Mamar bin Abdullah bin Hanzala, for Ibn Hibban deemed him trustworthy and included his hadith in his Sahih, and Ibn Hajar likewise graded it hasan. Ibn Kathir said in his Tafsir, after relating it through Ahmad's route, "This is the correct account of the reason behind the revelation of the opening of this story."
