I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say from the pulpit, "The sons of Hashim bin Mughira asked permission to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abu Talib. I will not give permission, then I will not give permission, then I will not give permission, unless Ibn Abu Talib wishes to divorce my daughter and marry their daughter. She is but a part of me. What disturbs her disturbs me, and what harms her harms me."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول وهو على المنبر: إن بني هاشم بن المغيرة استأذنوا في أن ينكحوا ابنتهم علي بن أبي طالب فلا آذن، ثم لا آذن، ثم لا آذن، إلا أن يريد ابن أبي طالب أن يطلق ابنتي وينكح ابنتهم، فإنما هي بضعة مني يريبني ما أرابها، ويؤذيني ما آذاها.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Marriage (5230), and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2449-39), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, from Miswar bin Makhrama, who said, and then he mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's. Muslim paired with Qutayba, Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Yunus, both narrating from Layth with the same chain.In another wording, "Fatimah is a part of me, so whoever angers her angers me." Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (3714) from Abu Walid, who said, Ibn Uyayna narrated to us, from Amr bin Dinar, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, from Miswar bin Makhrama, who then mentioned it.
