Ali bin Abu Talib proposed to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl while he was still married to Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Fatimah heard of this, she came to the Prophet ﷺ and said to him, "Your people are saying that you do not get angry for the sake of your daughters. Here is Ali about to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl."Miswar said, The Prophet ﷺ then stood up, and I heard him recite the testimony of faith and then say, "To proceed, I gave my daughter in marriage to Abu al-As bin Rabi, and he spoke truthfully to me and kept his word. Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, is a piece of me, and I hate that they should put her to trial. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never be joined together under one man."So Ali abandoned the proposal.
أن عليا بن أبي طالب، خطب بنت أبي جهل، وعنده فاطمة بنت رسول الله ﷺ، فلما سمعت بذلك فاطمة أتت النبي ﷺ فقالت له: إن قومك يتحدثون أنك لا تغضب لبناتك، وهذا علي ناكحا ابنة أبي جهل. قال المسور: فقام النبي ﷺ فسمعته حين تشهد قال: أما بعد فإني أنكحت أبا العاص بن الربيع، فحدثني فصدقني، وإن فاطمة بنت محمد مضغة مني، وإنما أكره أن يفتنوها، وإنها والله لا تجتمع بنت رسول الله وبنت عدو الله عند رجل واحد أبدا. قال: فترك علي الخطبة.
Bukhari narrated it in Fadail al-Sahabah (3729), and Muslim in Fadail al-Sahabah (2449-96), both through the route of Abu Yaman, who said, Shuayb informed us, from Zuhri, who said, Ali bin Husayn narrated to me that Miswar bin Makhrama said, then he mentioned it. The wording given is Muslim's, and Bukhari's wording is similar. In Bukhari's wording it says, "that he would harm her by it," instead of "that they would tempt her away from it."
