A man said, "Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has a date palm and I want it so I can complete the wall of my garden. Order him to give it to me so I can finish my wall."The Prophet ﷺ said to the owner, "Give it to him in exchange for a date palm in Paradise."But the man refused. Then Ubayy Dahdah came to him and said, "Sell me your date palm in exchange for my garden."He did so. Then Ubayy Dahdah went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have purchased that date palm in exchange for my garden."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then give it to him, for I have granted it to you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "How many a heavily laden date palm cluster awaits Ubayy Dahdah in Paradise!" He repeated this several times.Ubayy Dahdah went to his wife and said, "Umm Dahdah, leave the garden, for I have sold it in exchange for a date palm in Paradise."She replied, "What a profitable transaction!" or words to that effect.
Ahmad (12482) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (22/300–301) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (7159) and Hakim (2/20) graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Hammad bin Salama, from Thabit, from Anas, who related it. Its isnad is sahih.Haythami said in Al-Majma (9/324), "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it, and the men of both their chains are the men of the Sahih."
