I was sitting with Saeed bin Jubayr when he asked, "Which of you saw the shooting star that fell last night?"I said, "I did." Then I added, "But I was not engaged in prayer, I had been stung."He asked, "What did you do about it?"I replied, "I had someone recite a ruqyah over me."He asked, "What led you to do that?"I said, "A hadith that Shaybi narrated to us."He asked, "And what did Shaybi narrate to you?"I said, "He narrated to us from Burayda bin Husayb al-Aslami that he said, 'There is no ruqyah except for the evil eye or for a sting.'"Saeed said, "Whoever stops at what he has heard has done well, but Ibn Abbas narrated to us from the Prophet ﷺ that he said, 'The nations were shown to me. I saw a prophet with a small group of followers, and a prophet with one or two men, and a prophet with no one at all. Then a great multitude was raised up before me, and I thought they were my nation, but I was told, This is Musa ﷺ and his people. Look instead toward the horizon. So I looked, and there was a great multitude. Then I was told, Look at the other horizon, and there too was a great multitude. I was told, This is your nation, and along with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment.'Then the Prophet ﷺ got up and went into his house, and the people began discussing those who would enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. Some said, "Perhaps they are the ones who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Others said, "Perhaps they are those who were born into Islam and never associated anything with Allah."They mentioned various other possibilities. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and asked, "What are you discussing?"They told him, and he said, "They are those who do not perform ruqyah, nor seek it from others, nor practice augury, and they place their trust in their Lord."Ukkasha bin Mihsan stood up and said, "Pray to Allah to make me one of them."He said, "You are one of them."Then another man stood and said, "Pray to Allah to make me one of them."He said, "Ukkasha has beaten you to it."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (220), from Saeed bin Mansur, who said, Hushaym narrated to us, Husayn bin Abdul-Rahman informed us, he said, then he mentioned it. Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Raqaq (6541) through the route of Hushaym, except that he did not mention the story in full. However, he did mention part of this story in the Book of Medicine (5705) through the route of Ibn Fudayl, who said, Husayn narrated to us, from Amir, from Imran bin Husayn, who said, "There is no charm except against the evil eye or a scorpion sting." So I mentioned it to Saeed bin Jubayr, and he said, Ibn Abbas narrated to us, and he mentioned the hadith in a form close to it.As for what Tirmidhi narrated (2446), from Abu Husayn Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Yunus, who said, Abthar bin Qasim narrated to us, who said, Husayn, that is Ibn Abdul-Rahman, narrated to us, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said, When the Prophet ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey, he began to pass by prophet after prophet, some accompanied by a large group of people, others by a small band, and others by no one at all, until he passed by a vast dark multitude. I said, "Who is this?" It was said, "Musa and his people, but raise your head and look." He said, "So there it was, a vast dark multitude filling the horizon from this side and that side, and it was said, 'These are your community, and besides them, seventy thousand of your community will enter Paradise without being brought to account.'"He then entered without asking them anything further, and it was not explained to them who these were. So they said, "We are they," while others said, "They are the children of those who were born upon fitrah and Islam." Then the Prophet ﷺ came out and said, "They are the ones who do not brand themselves with cautery, do not seek charms, do not take omens, and rely upon their Lord." Then Ukashah bin Mihsan stood up and said, "Am I one of them, Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Yes." Then another man stood up and said, "Am I one of them?" So he said, "Ukashah has beaten you to it."The mention of the Night Journey in this hadith is shadh, since it contradicts what is established in the Sahihayn, because the narration of Hushaym bin Bashir from Husayn is stronger than the narration of Abthar bin Qasim from him. Abu Dawud said, Ahmad said, "No one's hadith from Husayn is more sahih than that of Hushaym." Husayn was reliable, but his memory changed later in life, and Hushaym is among those who heard from him before this change occurred, whereas as for Abthar bin Qasim, it is not known whether he heard from him before or after the change. The claim that the Night Journey was repeated involves forcing an interpretation and contradicts the historical record, since this hadith actually occurred in Madinah. This hadith in fact pertains to a dream, so perhaps the story of the dream became confused for one of the narrators, who then expressed it in terms of the Night Journey. The story of the dream is as found in the hadith that follows.
