We were speaking with the Prophet of Allah ﷺ one night until our conversation grew long, then we returned to our homes. When morning came, we went early to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "The prophets were shown to me last night with their followers from among their nations. A prophet would come with three men from his people, another prophet would come with a small band from his people, another with a few men from his people, and a prophet would come with not a single one of his people. Then Musa bin Imran passed by me with a great throng from the Children of Israil, and when I saw them they pleased me. I asked, 'My Lord, who are these?' He said, 'This is your brother Musa bin Imran.'Then I saw a great mass like the hills of Makkah blocking the horizon. I asked, 'My Lord, who are these?' He said, 'Your nation.' Then it was said to me, 'Are you pleased?' I said, 'My Lord, I am pleased. My Lord, I am pleased.' Then I was told, 'With these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning.'"Then Ukkashah bin Mihsan, of Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah, stood up and said, "Prophet of Allah, ask your Lord to make me one of them."He said, "O Allah, make him one of them."Then another man stood up and said, "Prophet of Allah, ask your Lord to make me one of them."He replied, "Ukkashah has beaten you to it."Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "May my father and mother be your ransom. If you are able to be among the seventy, then be so. If you fall short of that, then be among the people of the hills. If you fall short of that, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw there great numbers of people pressing together."The Prophet of Allah ﷺ then said, "I hope that those who follow me from my nation will be one quarter of the people of Paradise."We proclaimed Allah's greatness. Then he said, "I hope they will be one third."We proclaimed Allah's greatness. Then he said, "I hope they will be one half."We proclaimed Allah's greatness, and the Prophet of Allah ﷺ recited, "A multitude from the former generations, and a multitude from the latter generations" [Waqiah 56:39–40].The Muslims discussed among themselves who these seventy might be, and they said, "We think they are people who were born in Islam and continued to act upon it until they died upon it."Word of their discussion reached the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and he ﷺ said, "It is not so. Rather, they are those who do not seek ruqyah, do not seek cauterization, do not believe in evil omens, and rely upon their Lord."
Ahmad (3989), Bazzar (1440, 1441), and Ibn Hibban (6431), who graded it sahih, along with Hakim (4/577–578), and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (10/5) all narrated it through various chains from Qatada, from Hasan and Ala bin Ziyad, from Imran bin Husayn, from Abdullah bin Masud, who related it. The wording given is that of Ibn Hibban, and the wording of the others is similar, except that Imam Ahmad did not give the actual wording. Its chain of transmission is sahih. As for his saying, "a throng from Banu Israil," the word "throng" (kabkabah) refers to a tightly packed group of people. His saying "the hills" (zirab) refers to small mountains. His saying "yatahareshoon" means they fought one another, and it has also been reported with the wording "yatahawathoon," meaning they mingled together.
