The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said concerning Abbas, "This is Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib, the most generous of Quraysh in giving and the most attentive in maintaining ties of kinship."
قال رسول الله ﷺ للعباس: هذا العباس بن عبد المطلب أجود قريش كفا وأوصلها.
Narrated by Ahmad (1610), Nasai in Fadail al-Sahabah (71), Abu Yaala (820), Ibn Hibban (7052), and Hakim (3/328-329), all through the route of Muhammad bin Talha Taymi, who said, "Abu Suhayl Nafi bin Malik narrated to me, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Saad bin Abu Waqqas," and he related it. Its isnad is hasan because of Muhammad bin Talha Taymi, for his hadith is hasan. Haythami said in Majma (9/268), "Ahmad and Bazzar narrated it in similar wording, as did Abu Yaala and Tabarani in Awsat, and it contains Muhammad bin Talha Taymi, whom more than one scholar deemed reliable, and the rest of the men of Ahmad and Abu Yaala are the men of sahih."It was also narrated from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abbas is from me, and I am from him." Narrated by Tirmidhi (3759), Nasai (4775), and Ahmad (2734), and Hakim declared it sahih (3/325), all through the route of Israil, from Abdul-Ala, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith, we do not know it except through the hadith of Israil." Abdul-Ala is Ibn Amir Thalabi, who is daif according to most scholars, and Dhahabi criticized it on this basis in Siyar (2/99, 102).The wording above is that of Tirmidhi, while Ahmad and Nasai gave a longer wording, which follows. From Ibn Abbas, a man from the Ansar spoke ill of a father of Abbas from the time of pre-Islamic ignorance, so Abbas struck him. His people then came and said, "By Allah, we will strike him just as he struck him." They took up their weapons, and this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he climbed the pulpit and said, "O people, which of the people of the earth is most honored before Allah?" They said, "You are." He said, "Indeed Abbas is from me and I am from him, so do not curse our dead, for you will thereby offend our living." The people then came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we seek refuge in Allah from your anger."It was also narrated from Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib that Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib came in to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while angry, and I was with him, and the Prophet said, "What has angered you?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is between us and Quraysh, that when they meet among themselves they meet with cheerful faces, but when they meet us they meet us otherwise?" He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry until his face reddened, then he said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, faith will not enter the heart of a man until he loves you for the sake of Allah and His Messenger." Then he said, "O people, whoever offends my uncle has offended me, for a man's uncle is the counterpart of his father."Narrated by Tirmidhi (3758), Ahmad (17515), and Nasai in Fadail al-Sahabah (73), and Hakim declared it sahih (3/333), all through the route of Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Abdullah bin Harith, who said, "Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib narrated to me," and he related it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." But it is not as he said, for Yazid bin Abu Ziyad is the Hashimi, their freedman, the Kufan, who is daif according to the majority of scholars, and he was a Shiite. It was also narrated from Abbas bin Muttalib, who said, we used to meet groups of Quraysh while they were conversing, and they would cut off their conversation. We mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "What is the matter with people who are conversing, and when they see a man from the people of my household they cut off their conversation? By Allah, faith will not enter the heart of a man until Allah loves them and loves their kinship to me."Narrated by Ibn Majah (140) from Muhammad bin Tarif, who said, "Muhammad bin Fudayl narrated to us, Amash narrated to us, from Abu Sabra Nakhai, from Muhammad bin Kaab Qurazi, from Abbas bin Muttalib," and he related it. Hakim declared it sahih through this route (4/75). Abu Sabra Nakhai is said to be named Abdullah bin Aabis. Ibn Main said, "I do not know him." Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the reliable narrators, and for this reason Hafiz said of him, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated, and I have not found a corroborator for him. Also, Muhammad bin Kaab Qurazi did not meet Abbas. Busiri criticized the hadith on this basis in Misbah Zujaja. It was also narrated from Abdullah bin Amr, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed Allah took me as a close friend just as He took Ibrahim as a close friend. So my dwelling and the dwelling of Ibrahim in Paradise on the Day of Resurrection will be facing each other, with Abbas between us, a believer between two close friends."Narrated by Ibn Majah (141) from Abdul-Wahhab bin Dahhak, who said, "Ismail bin Ayyash narrated to us, from Safwan bin Amr, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, from Kathir bin Mura Hadrami, from Abdullah bin Amr," and he related it. Abdul-Wahhab bin Dahhak is Ibn Aban, Abu Harith Himsi, who is discarded as a narrator, and Busiri criticized the hadith on this basis.
