The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Umar to collect the alms. It was reported, "Ibn Jameel, Khalid bin Walid, and Abbas, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, have refused to pay."He then mentioned the hadith, in which it is said that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Umar, do you not realize that a man's paternal uncle is like his father?"
بعث رسول الله ﷺ عمر على الصدقة، فقيل: منع ابن جميل، وخالد بن الوليد، والعباس عم رسول الله ﷺ، فذكر الحديث وفيه: ثم قال: يا عمر، أما شعرت أن عم الرجل صنو أبيه.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1468), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (983-11), both through Abu Zinad, from Aaraj, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. The wording given is Muslim's. Bukhari's version does not include, "O Umar, did you not realize that a man's uncle is like his father's counterpart."A similar meaning is reported from Ali, that the Prophet ﷺ said to Umar regarding Abbas, "A man's uncle is like his father's counterpart," this being after Umar had spoken to him about the sadaqah. Tirmidhi narrated it (3760), and Ahmad (725), both from the hadith of Wahb bin Jareer, who said, my father narrated to me, saying, I heard Amash relating from Amr bin Mura, from Abu Bakhtari, from Ali, and he related it. The wording given is Tirmidhi's.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan hadith." Haythami said in al-Majma (10/238), "Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the sahih... except that Abu Bakhtari did not hear from Ali, nor from Umar, so it is a sahih mursal."Haythami mentioned it in al-Majma because of the length of the hadith in Ahmad's version, otherwise it does not meet his criteria. As for Abu Bakhtari, the matter is as Haythami said, for he never met Ali nor saw him. This was stated by Shuba. See al-Marasil (278).
