Jabir reported, "I set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition, and my camel grew slow and held me back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with me and said, 'Jabir.'I replied, 'Yes.'He asked, 'What is the matter with you?'I said, 'My camel has slowed me down and become exhausted, so I have fallen behind.'He dismounted and prodded the camel with his curved staff, then said, 'Mount.'I mounted, and indeed I found myself having to hold the camel back from outpacing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He asked, 'Have you married?'I said, 'Yes.'He asked, 'A virgin or a previously married woman?'I said, 'A previously married woman.'He said, 'Why not a young girl, that you might play with her and she with you?'I said, 'I have sisters, so I preferred to marry a woman who could gather them, comb their hair, and look after them.'He said, 'You are about to arrive home. When you arrive, be wise, be wise.' Then he said, 'Will you sell me your camel?'I said, 'Yes.'So he bought it from me for an ounce of gold. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, and I arrived the next morning. I came to the mosque and found him at its door.He said, 'Have you only just arrived?'I said, 'Yes.'He said, 'Then leave your camel, come in, and pray two units of prayer.'So I went in and prayed, then returned. He ordered Bilal to weigh out an ounce for me, and Bilal weighed it for me, tipping the scale in my favor. I set off, and when I had turned away, he said, 'Call Jabir to me.'I was called, and I thought, 'Now he will return the camel to me,' and there was nothing more hateful to me than that.But he said, 'Take your camel, and the price is yours as well.'"
خرجت مع رسول الله ﷺ في غزاة فأبطأ بي جملي فأتى علي رسول الله ﷺ فقال لي: يا جابر. قلت: نعم. قال: ما شأنك. قلت أبطأ بي جملي وأعيا فتخلفت. فنزل فحجنه بمحجنه ثم قال: اركب. فركبت فلقد رأيتني أكفه عن رسول الله ﷺ فقال: أتزوجت. فقلت: نعم. فقال: أبكرا أم ثيبا؟ فقلت: بل ثيب. قال: فهلا جارية تلاعبها وتلاعبك. قلت: إن لي أخوات فأحببت أن أتزوج امرأة تجمعهن وتمشطهن وتقوم عليهن. قال: أما إنك قادم فإذا قدمت فالكيس الكيس. ثم قال: أتبيع جملك. قلت نعم. فاشتراه منى بأوتية ثم قدم رسول الله ﷺ وقدمت بالغداة فجئت المسجد فوجدته على باب المسجد فقال: الآن حين قدمت. قلت: نعم. قال: فدع جملك، وادخل، فصل ركعتين. قال: فدخلت فصليت ثم رجعت فأمر بلالا أن يزن لي أوقية فوزن لي بلال فأرجح في الميزان- قال:- فانطلقت فلما وليت قال: ادع لي جابرا. فدعيت فقلت الآن يرد علي الجمل. ولم يكن شيء أبغض إلي منه فقال: خذ جملك، ولك ثمنه.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Sales (2097), and Muslim in the Book of Nursing (715: 57), both through the route of Abdul-Wahhab bin Abdul-Majid Thaqafi, who said, Ubaydullah related to us, from Wahb bin Kaysan, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, and then he mentioned it.Muslim also related it in the Book of Nursing (715: 58) through the route of Abu Nadra, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, "We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I was riding a water-carrying camel, lagging behind at the very back of the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck it, or he said he prodded it, I think he said, with something he had with him." He said, "After that it began to move ahead of the people, straining against me until I had to hold it back." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Will you sell it to me for such and such, and may Allah forgive you?' I said, 'It is yours, O Prophet of Allah.' He said, 'Will you sell it to me for such and such, and may Allah forgive you?' I said, 'It is yours, O Prophet of Allah.'"He said, "Then he said to me, 'Have you married since your father's death?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'A widow or a virgin?' I said, 'A widow.' He said, 'Why did you not marry a virgin, so that you could laugh with her and she with you, and play with her and she with you?'"Abu Nadra said, "This became a saying that the Muslims would use, 'Do such and such, and may Allah forgive you.'"
