Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi reported,

I heard saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, Zubayr, and Miqdad, and said, 'Go to the garden of Khakh, where you will find a woman traveling on a camel carrying a letter. Take it from her.'So we set off, our horses galloping with us, until we came upon the woman.We said, "Hand over the letter."She replied, "I have no letter with me."We said, "Either you produce the letter or we will strip off your clothes."So she took it out from her braided hair. We brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it read, "From Hatib bin Abu Balta to certain polytheists among the people of Mecca," informing them of some of the affairs of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Hatib, what is this?"He replied, "Do not be hasty with me, Messenger of Allah. I was a man attached to Quraysh," (Sufyan said, he was an ally of theirs but not from among them by blood) "and those of the Muhajirun with you have relatives there who protect their families. So I wanted, since I lacked that lineage among them, to do them a favor by which they would protect my relatives. I did not do it out of disbelief, nor as apostasy from my religion, nor out of contentment with disbelief after Islam."The Prophet ﷺ said, "He has spoken the truth."Umar said, "Let me, Messenger of Allah, strike the neck of this hypocrite."He replied, "He witnessed Badr. How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said, 'Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.'"Then Allah Most High revealed, "O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies" [Mumtahanah 60:1].The verse is not mentioned in the narrations of Abu Bakr and Zuhayr. Ishaq combined it in his narration, citing the recitation, along with Sufyan.

عن عبيد الله بن أبي رافع، وهو كاتب علي قال

سمعت رضي الله عنه وهو يقول: بعثنا رسول الله ﷺ أنا والزبير والمقداد، فقال: ائتوا روضة خاخ، فإن بها ظعينة معها كتاب، فخذوه منها. فانطلقنا تعادى بنا خيلنا، فإذا نحن بالمرأة، فقلنا: أخرجي الكتاب، فقالت: ما معي كتاب، فقلنا: لتخرجن الكتاب أو لنجردن الثياب، فأخرجته من عقاصها، فأتينا به رسول الله ﷺ فإذا فيه: من حاطب بن أبي بلتعة إلى ناس من المشركين من أهل مكة، يخبرهم ببعض أمر رسول الله ﷺ، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: يا حاطب ما هذا؟ قال: لا تعجل علي يا رسول الله، إني كنت امرأ ملصقا في قريش،- قال سفيان: كان حليفا لهم، ولم يكن من أنفسها-، وكان ممن معك من المهاجرين لهم قرابات يحمون بها أهليهم، فأحببت إذ فاتني ذلك من النسب فيهم، أن أتخذ فيهم يدا يحمون بها قرابتي، ولم أفعله كفرا ولا ارتدادا عن ديني، ولا رضا بالكفر بعد الإسلام، فقال النبي ﷺ: صدق. فقال عمر: دعني يا رسول الله أضرب عنق هذا المنافق. فقال: إنه قد شهد بدرا، وما يدريك لعل الله اطلع على أهل بدر، فقال: اعملوا ما شئتم فقد غفرت لكم. فأنزل الله تعالى: {يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تتخذوا عدوي وعدوكم أولياء} [الممتحنة: ١] وليس في حديث أبي بكر وزهير ذكرا الآية، وجمعها إسحاق في رواية من تلاوة وسفيان.
