When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Fatimah to Ali, he sent with him a velvet cloth, a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber, two millstones, a waterskin, and two jars. One day Ali said to Fatimah, "By Allah, I have drawn water until my chest aches. Allah has now brought your father captives, so go and ask him for a servant."Fatimah replied, "And by Allah, I have ground grain until my hands are blistered."So she went to the Prophet ﷺ, and he asked, "What brings you, my little daughter?"She said, "I came to greet you with peace." She felt too shy to ask him, so she returned.Ali asked her, "What did you do?"She said, "I was too shy to ask him."So we both went to him together, and Ali said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I have drawn water until my chest aches."Fatimah said, "I have ground grain until my hands are blistered. Allah has brought you captives and abundance, so let us have some."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "By Allah, I will not give to you both and leave the people of the Suffah with their bellies folded in hunger, having nothing to spend on them. Rather, I will sell the captives and spend their price on them."So they returned. Then the Prophet ﷺ came to them after they had entered beneath their blanket. When they covered their heads, their feet were exposed, and when they covered their feet, their heads were exposed. They sprang up, but he said, "Stay where you are."Then he said, "Shall I not tell you of something better than what you asked me for?"They said, "Yes indeed."He said, "Words that Jibreel taught me. Glorify Allah ten times after every prayer, praise Him ten times, and magnify Him ten times. And when you retire to your bed, glorify Him thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times, and magnify Him thirty-four times."Ali said, "By Allah, I have not abandoned them since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught them to me."Ibn al-Kawwa asked him, "Not even on the night of Siffin?"He replied, "May Allah fight you, people of Iraq. Yes, not even on the night of Siffin."
Ahmad (838, 596), Ibn Saad (8/25), and Bazzar (757) all narrated it through various chains from Hammad bin Salama, from Ata bin Saaib, from his father, from Ali, who said, "..." then he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Ata bin Saaib is trustworthy, the scholars have affirmed his reliability, except that his memory became confused later in life. However, Hammad bin Salama narrated this hadith from him, and he is among those who heard from him before the confusion set in.A note, what relates to the Prophet ﷺ teaching the remembrances and Fatimah's request for a servant has been reported by the two sheikhs (Bukhari and Muslim) through another route from the hadith of Ali . Their version does not mention the People of the Suffah. The Suffah, with a dammah on the sad and a doubled fa, was a shaded area at the rear of the Prophet's masjid ﷺ where the poor who had no shelter and no family would take refuge. Their numbers would increase and decrease depending on changing circumstances. It has been said that at various times their number reached about six hundred people.
