A man from his people reported that during the caliphate of Umar bin Khattab, he used to say, "Uthman will not die until he becomes caliph."We asked, "How do you know that?"He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Last night I saw in a dream as if three of my companions were being weighed. Abu Bakr was weighed and outweighed the scale, then Umar was weighed and outweighed the scale, then Uthman was weighed and our companion fell short, though he is righteous.'"
عن رجل من قومه قال: كان يقول خلافة عمر بن الخطاب: لا يموت عثمان حتى يستخلف، قلنا: من أين تعلم ذلك؟ قال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: رأيت الليلة في المنام كأن ثلاثة من أصحابي وزنوا، فوزن أبو بكر، فوزن، ثم وزن عمر، فوزن، ثم وزن عثمان، فنقص صاحبنا، وهو صالح.
Ahmad (16604) narrated it from Abu Nadr, who said, Shayban told us, from Ashath, from Aswad bin Hilal, from a man from his people, who said, then he mentioned it.Abu Nadr is Hashim bin Qasim. Shayban is Ibn Abdul-Rahman Nahwi. Ashath is Ibn Abu Shatha Sulaym bin Aswad. Its isnad is sahih, and the anonymity of the companion does not harm it. His statement, "There were three of my companions who were weighed," is in the passive construction.It has been narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah that he used to relate that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A righteous man was shown tonight, in a dream, that Abu Bakr was tied to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Umar was tied to Abu Bakr, and Uthman was tied to Umar." Jabir said, "When we got up from before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we said, as for the righteous man, he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and as for some of them being tied to others, they are the rulers of this affair with which Allah sent His Prophet."Abu Dawud (4636) and Ahmad (14821) both narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Harb, from Zubaydi, who is Muhammad bin Walid, from Ibn Shihab, from Amr bin Aban bin Uthman, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, then he mentioned it.In its isnad is Amr bin Aban bin Uthman, from whom two narrators reported, and no one deemed him reliable except Ibn Hibban, so his status is unknown. Ibn Hibban was uncertain whether Amr bin Aban heard from Jabir, saying, "I do not know whether he heard from him or not." Likewise, there is disagreement over the isnad of this hadith.Bayhaqi narrated it in Dalail (6/348) through the route of Ibn Wahb, from Yunus bin Yazid, from Ibn Shihab, from Jabir, without mentioning Amr bin Aban. He said, "Shuayb bin Abu Hamza followed him in this manner, from Zuhri." Abu Dawud said, following the connected narration, "Yunus and Shuayb narrated it without mentioning Amr."I say, on this basis its isnad is disconnected, because Ibn Shihab did not hear from Jabir bin Abdullah.
