I was with the Prophet ﷺ in one of the gardens of Medina when a man came and asked to be let in.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Open the gate for him and give him the good news of Paradise."So I opened it, and there was Abu Bakr. I gave him the good news of what the Prophet ﷺ had said, and he praised Allah.Then another man came and asked to be let in.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Open it and give him the good news of Paradise."So I opened it, and there was Umar. I told him what the Prophet ﷺ had said, and he praised Allah.Then another man asked to be let in.The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Open it for him and give him the good news of Paradise, along with a trial that will befall him."And there was Uthman. I told him what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, and he praised Allah, then said, "Allah is the One whose help is sought."
كنت مع النبي ﷺ في حائط من حيطان المدينة فجاء رجل فاستفتح فقال النبي ﷺ: افتح له وبشره بالجنة، ففتحت له. فإذا أبو بكر، فبشرته بما قال النبي ﷺ، فحمد الله، ثم جاء رجل فاستفتح فقال النبي ﷺ: افتح وبشره بالجنة. ففتحت له فإذا هو عمر، فأخبرته بما قال النبي ﷺ، فحمد الله ثم استفتح رجل، فقال لي: افتح له وبشره بالجنة على بلوى تصيبه. فإذا عثمان فأخبرته بما قال رسول الله ﷺ، فحمد الله، ثم قال: الله المستعان.
Bukhari narrated it in Fadail al-Sahabah (3693), and Muslim in Fadail al-Sahabah (2403-28), both through Uthman bin Ghiyath, who said, Abu Uthman Nahdi told us, from Abu Musa Ashari, and he mentioned it. In one version by Muslim, "He said, 'Uthman, O Allah, grant patience,' or, 'Allah is the one from whom help is sought.'" He narrated it in Fadail al-Sahabah (2403-28) through another route from Uthman bin Ghiyath, with the same wording.
