Abu Musa reported that the Prophet ﷺ performed ablution at his home then went out. I said to myself, "I shall stay close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and remain with him for this entire day."He came to the mosque and asked about the Prophet ﷺ. They said, "He went out and headed in this direction." So I went out following his trail, asking about him, until he entered the well of Aris. I sat at the gate, which was made of palm branches, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ relieved himself and performed ablution. Then I got up and went to him, and there he was, sitting on the well of Aris, in the middle of its stone rim, having uncovered his shins and let them dangle into the well. I greeted him, then turned away and sat by the gate, saying to myself, "I shall be the doorkeeper of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ today."Then Abu Bakr came and pushed the gate.I asked, "Who is this?"He said, "Abu Bakr."I said, "Wait a moment." Then I went and said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Bakr asking permission to enter."He said, "Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise."I came forward and said to Abu Bakr, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gives you glad tidings of Paradise." So Abu Bakr entered and sat to the right of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with him on the rim, dangling his feet into the well as the Prophet ﷺ had done, and uncovering his shins. Then I returned and sat down. I had left my brother performing ablution to follow me, so I said, "If Allah intends good for so-and-so," meaning his brother, "He will bring him here."Then someone moved the gate.I asked, "Who is this?"He said, "Umar bin Khattab."I said, "Wait a moment." Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, greeted him, and said, "This is Umar bin Khattab asking permission to enter."He said, "Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise."I came and said, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gives you glad tidings of Paradise." He entered and sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the rim, to his left, and dangled his feet into the well. Then I returned and sat down, saying, "If Allah intends good for so-and-so, He will bring him here."Then someone came and moved the gate.I asked, "Who is this?"He said, "Uthman bin Affan."I said, "Wait a moment." I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him.He said, "Let him in, and give him glad tidings of Paradise, along with a trial that will befall him."I came and said to him, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gives you glad tidings of Paradise, along with a trial that will befall you." He entered and found the rim already full, so he sat opposite them on the other side.Sharik said, Saeed bin Musayab said, "I interpreted this as referring to their graves."
