The Prophet ﷺ entered a garden and ordered me to guard its gate. A man came seeking permission to enter, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Let him in, and give him the good news of Paradise." It was Abu Bakr.Then another man came seeking permission, and he said, "Let him in, and give him the good news of Paradise." It was Umar.Then another came seeking permission. The Prophet ﷺ paused for a moment, then said, "Let him in, and give him the good news of Paradise along with a trial that will befall him." It was Uthman bin Affan.Hammad said, Asim Ahwal and Ali bin Hakam also narrated to us that they heard Abu Uthman relating from Abu Musa something similar. Asim added that the Prophet ﷺ had been sitting in a place with water, with his knees, or one knee, uncovered. When Uthman entered, he covered them.
أن النبي ﷺ دخل حائطا وأمرني بحفظ باب الحائط، فجاء رجل يستأذن، فقال: ائذن له وبشره بالجنة. فإذا أبو بكر، ثم جاء آخر يستأذن، فقال: ائذن له وبشره بالجنة. فإذا عمر، ثم جاء آخر يستأذن، فسكت هنيهة، ثم قال: ائذن له وبشره بالجنة على بلوى ستصيبه. فإذا عثمان بن عفان. قال حماد: وحدثنا عاصم الأحول وعلي بن الحكم سمعا أبا عثمان يحدث عن أبي موسى بنحوه وزاد فيه عاصم: أن النبي ﷺ كان قاعدا في مكان فيه ماء، قد انكشف عن ركبتيه أو ركبته فلما دخل عثمان غطاها.
Bukhari narrated it in the Virtues of the Companions (3695) from Sulayman bin Harb, who said, Hammad narrated to us, from Ayub, from Abu Uthman, from Abu Musa, that the Prophet ﷺ entered a garden, and he mentioned the hadith.In another wording from Bukhari, "He was with the Prophet ﷺ in one of the gardens of Madinah, and in the Prophet's ﷺ hand was a stick with which he was tapping between the water and the mud, when a man came seeking to be let in..."And at the end of it, "Then another man sought to be let in, and he had been reclining, so he sat up and said, 'Let him in and give him the good news of Paradise, in exchange for a trial that will befall him or is coming to him.'"Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Manners (6216) through another route, from Uthman bin Ghiyath, with the same wording.
