Salama bin Azraq reported,

Salama bin Azraq reported that he was sitting one day in the market with Abdullah bin Umar when a funeral procession passed by, with people weeping over the deceased. Ibn Umar criticized this and rebuked them.Salama bin Azraq said to him, "Do not say that, Abu Abdul-Rahman. I bear witness against Abu Hurairah that I heard him say, when a woman from Marwan's daughters-in-law died and Marwan attended her funeral. Marwan ordered that the women who were weeping be struck, but Abu Hurairah said to him, 'Let them be, Abu Abdul-Malik. A funeral procession once passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with people weeping over it. I was with him, and Umar bin Khattab, may Allah have mercy on him, was also with him. Umar rebuked the women who were weeping with the procession, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Let them be, Ibn Khattab. The soul is stricken, the eye sheds tears, and the loss is fresh."'"Ibn Umar asked, "You heard this yourself?"He replied, "Yes."Ibn Umar said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."
