Madan bin Abu Talha reported,

Umar bin Khattab stood on the pulpit one Friday, praised Allah and glorified Him, then mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr . He then said, "I have seen a dream which I can only interpret as a sign that my time is near. I dreamt as if a rooster pecked me twice." He added, "I was told it was a red rooster. I related the dream to Asma bint Umays, the wife of Abu Bakr , and she said, 'A man from among the non-Arabs will kill you.'"He continued, "The people are urging me to appoint a successor. Allah will not allow His religion or the caliphate by which He sent His Prophet ﷺ to be lost. If something happens to me suddenly, then the matter of consultation lies with these six men with whom the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he died. Whichever of them you pledge allegiance to, listen to him and obey. I know that some people will challenge this matter, the very ones I fought with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. Those are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided.By Allah, I leave behind nothing more troubling to me from what my Lord entrusted to me when He made me caliph than the matter of kalalah. By Allah, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ never spoke harshly to me about anything during my companionship with him as harshly as he did concerning the matter of kalalah. He even poked my chest with his finger and said, 'The verse of summer revealed at the end of Surat an-Nisa suffices you.' If I live, I will give a ruling on it that both the literate and the illiterate will know.I call Allah to witness against the governors of the provinces. I sent them only to teach the people their religion, to clarify for them the sunnah of their Prophet ﷺ, and to refer back to me whatever is unclear to them.Now, people, you eat from two plants which I consider nothing but foul, namely garlic and onions. By Allah, I used to see the Prophet of Allah ﷺ detect their smell on a man, and he would order that the man be taken by the hand and led out of the mosque until brought to al-Baqi. So whoever must eat them, let him kill their odor by cooking."The narrator said, He delivered this sermon to the people on Friday, and he was struck on Wednesday.

عن معدان بن أبي طلحة اليعمري

أن عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه قام على المنبر يوم الجمعة فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ثم ذكر رسول الله ﷺ وذكر أبا بكر رضي الله عنه ثم قال رأيت رؤيا لا أراها إلا لحضور أجلي رأيت كأن ديكا نقرني نقرتين قال وذكر لي أنه ديك أحمر فقصصتها على أسماء بنت عميس امرأة أبي بكر رضي الله عنهما فقالت يقتلك رجل من العجم قال وإن الناس يأمرونني أن أستخلف وإن الله لم يكن ليضيع دينه وخلافته التي بعث بها نبيه ﷺ وإن يعجل بي أمر فإن الشورى في هؤلاء الستة الذين مات نبي الله ﷺ وهو عنهم راض فمن بايعتم منهم فاسمعوا له وأطيعوا وإني أعلم أن أناسا سيطعنون في هذا الأمر أنا قاتلتهم بيدي هذه على الإسلام أولئك أعداء الله الكفار الضلال وايم الله ما أترك فيما عهد إلي ربي فاستخلفني شيئا أهم إلي من الكلالة وايم الله ما أغلظ لي نبي الله ﷺ في شيء منذ صحبته أشد ما أغلظ لي في شأن الكلالة حتى طعن بإصبعه في صدري وقال تكفيك آية الصيف التي نزلت في آخر سورة النساء وإني إن أعش فسأقضي فيها بقضاء يعلمه من يقرأ ومن لا يقرأ وإني أشهد الله على أمراء الأمصار إني إنما بعثتهم ليعلموا الناس دينهم ويبينوا لهم سنة نبيهم ﷺ ويرفعوا إلي ما عمي عليهم ثم إنكم أيها الناس تأكلون من شجرتين لا أراهما إلا خبيثتين هذا الثوم والبصل وايم الله لقد كنت أرى نبي الله ﷺ يجد ريحهما من الرجل فيأمر به فيؤخذ بيده فيخرج به من المسجد حتى يؤتى به البقيع فمن أكلهما لا بد فليمتهما طبخا قال فخطب الناس يوم الجمعة وأصيب يوم الأربعاء
