The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to cover the water container, tie up the waterskin, and turn vessels upside down.
حدثنا خلف بن الوليد قال حدثنا خالد عن سهيل بن أبي صالح عن أبيه
أمرنا رسول الله ﷺ بتغطية الوضوء وإيكاء السقاء وإكفاء الإناء
Its isnad is sahih. It is found in Muslim 3/1594, number 2012, in the chapter on judgments, on the command to cover vessels, with the wording of the command, "Cover the vessel." Similarly in Bukhari 4/150, in the chapter on the beginning of creation, on the description of Iblis and his forces, and in Abu Dawud 3/339, number 3731, in the chapter on drinks, on tying up vessels, and in Ibn Khuzayma 1/68. Their wordings are close to one another. Al-ika means tying, and what is meant by it is covering every vessel that contains water or food. Akfaat al-ina meaning "I overturned the vessel," so the meaning of overturning the vessel here refers to an empty one, which one turns upside down so that nothing hides inside it and harms a person.
