The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were it not for the Children of Israil, meat would never have spoiled and food would never have gone bad, and were it not for Hawwa, no woman would ever betray her husband."
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا عوف عن خلاس بن عمرو الهجري قال
قال رسول الله ﷺ لولا بنو إسرائيل لم يخنز اللحم ولم يخبث الطعام ولولا حواء لم تخن أنثى زوجها
Its isnad is sahih. It will come again at 8155, in the manuscript of Hammam bin Munabbih, without his words "and the food did not spoil." Muslim related it in 1:421, from the manuscript of Hammam, in full. Bukhari related it in the manuscript of Hammam missing that phrase, by way of Abdullah bin Mubarak from Mamar from Hammam, at 6:261, and by way of Abdul-Razzaq from Mamar at 6:308.As for his words "the meat did not rot," with the letters kha, nun, and za, it is said "khanaza al-lahm yakhnuzu," from the pattern of "taiba," meaning it became foul and its smell changed. There is another dialect in which it follows the pattern of "qaada." Nawawi said in his commentary on Muslim, 10:59, the scholars said its meaning is that when Allah sent down manna upon Banu Israil, they were forbidden from storing it, but they stored it anyway, so it spoiled and became foul, and this has continued from that time onward. As for his words "and no female betrayed her husband," Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, 6:211, this contains an allusion to what happened with Eve, in her arranging for Adam to eat from the tree until he fell into that. So the meaning of her betrayal is that she accepted what Iblis made attractive to her, until she made it attractive to Adam. Since she was the mother of the daughters of Adam, they resembled her through birth and inherited trait, so scarcely does any woman escape betraying her husband in deed or in word. What is meant by betrayal here is not the committing of indecent acts, far from it, never. Rather, since she inclined toward the desire of the self in eating from the tree, and made that appealing to Adam, this was counted as a betrayal of him. As for the women who came after her, the betrayal of each one of them is according to her own measure. And I would add to what Hafiz said, that there were no men besides Adam at that time, so there could be no possibility that the betrayal meant committing indecent acts.
