The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every child is born upon the natural disposition, then his parents make him a Jew or a Christian, just as livestock are born whole and then their ears are branded."
حدثنا إبراهيم بن خالد حدثنا رباح عن عمر بن حبيب عن عمرو بن دينار عن طاوس
أن النبي ﷺ قال كل مولود ولد على الفطرة فأبواه يهودانه وينصرانه مثل الأنعام تنتج صحاحا فتكوى آذانها
Its isnad is sahih. Ibrahim bin Khalid bin Ubayd Qurashi Sanani, his reliability was already established at 544 and 4297, and we add here that Ibn Abu Hatim gave his biography at 97/1/1.Rabah, with the ra and the ba both having a fatha, is Ibn Zayd Sanani, whose reliability was already established at 1432. We add here that Ibn Saad gave his biography in Tabaqat 5:398, and Ibn Abu Hatim at 490/2/1.Umar bin Habib Makki, his reliability was already established at 4933. We add here that Ibn Abu Hatim gave his biography at 104/1/3.The hadith, by this route, was also related by Abu Naeem in Hilyah 9:228, from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Hasan, from Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, from his father, with this same isnad. However he did not mention at the end the words "like cattle... " and so on.The meaning of the hadith has occurred many times before, both at length and in brief, most recently at 7698, and we have already traced many of its routes in Sahih Ibn Hibban, number 128, in our edition.
